Building on the excitement generated by the exhibition “Africa and Byzantium” (MMA, CMA), Prof. Betsy Bolman and Dr. Andrea Achi organized a paradigm-shifting Spring Symposium of the same name at Dumbarton Oaks. Held on April 25-26, 2025, the event was sold out. Bolman framed the conversation in terms of ethics, necropolitics, post-colonial approaches, and the need to provincialize Europe. The papers covered North Africa, Egypt, Nubia and Ethiopia, and included topics of colonialist appropriation, nationalism, religious conversion, new discoveries, and more. It demonstrated a profound change in the orientation of the field.
