Graduate students in Prof. Gertsman’s and Dr. McCormick’s Mellon seminar explored images of the Pure Land through the close study of extraordinary CMA objects, including the Lotus Sutra handscroll (1970.64) and several hanging scrolls featuring the Amitabha Triad. A meditation exercise complete with the visualization of the Pure Land came as a welcomed break after the intense study of hell imagery that included rivers of pus, scorpion caves, and demonic ingestions!
