Rachel Sweeney, third-year PhD student in medieval art, was this year’s recipient of the Terence Barry Prize for Best Graduate Paper in Irish Medieval Studies from the American Society for Irish Medieval Studies. Her paper, “The Faddan More Psalter: Tangible Connections Between the Insular World and Byzantium,” was originally written for Prof. Betsy Bolman’s class and presented at the 2025 Byzantine Studies Conference. The paper explores the ecosemiotic significance of the papyrus lining discovered on the inside cover of the ninth-century Irish psalter. Rachel had the opportunity to see the psalter cover in person this summer during her research trip to Ireland!
