The region of Ani and Kars, on the eastern borders of the modern-day Turkish Republic, is dotted with spectacular medieval Armenian churches and monasteries. This talk will offer a first-person account of what it is like to work on these monuments, which, although largely neglected outside of specialist scholarship, are of exceptional historical value, astonishing beauty, and, unfortunately, in emergency structural condition.
