Please join us for an extraordinary opportunity to learn about virtually unknown medieval Christian art and architecture in modern Sudan. Dr. Obłuski will be talking about a range of issues, including the excavation of a small building with wall paintings that Archaeology Magazine named among the top ten discoveries in the world in 2023.
This lecture critically engages with the long-standing historiographical dichotomy between cultural “centres” and “peripheries,” a model that has often ascribed innovation to the former and passive reproduction to the latter. By examining newly discovered wall paintings from medieval Nubia, the talk invites attendees to reconsider the validity and utility of this paradigm in contemporary archaeological and art historical discourse.
