Join us on Friday, October 20th at 5:00 pm at the Cleveland Museum of Art Lecture Hall for the 2023 Harvey Buchanan Lecture, sponsored by the Department of Art History at Case Western Reserve University, which will be given by Carolyn Kinder Carr, PhD. Dr. Carr is the former Deputy Director and Chief Curator of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery and alumna of the Department of Art History and Art at CWRU. The lecture is entitled “Sara Tyson Hallowell: Pioneer Curator and Art Advisor in the Gilded Age.” It will highlight aspects of Sara Tyson Hallowell’s remarkable career as she develops a national reputation with critically acclaimed exhibitions in Chicago in the 1880s, enables Bertha and Potter Palmer to create the first important collection of Impressionist works in the Midwest, and forms friendships with artists, among them Mary Cassatt and Auguste Rodin. The lecture is free to the public; no ticket is required. We hope to see you there!
