Students From Professor Gertsman’s Seminar on Medieval Materiality Examine Medieval Materials First-hand

Last week, students from Professor Elina Gertsman’s seminar on medieval materiality put their studies into practice, when they examined medieval materials first-hand during a visit to the CMA’s Art Study Room. Lead by Dr. Gerhard Lutz, Robert P. Bergman Curator of Medieval Art, the students were thrilled to interact with several outstanding objects, including a 14th-century bronze aquamanile in the shape of horse and an illuminated leaf of parchment with an Annunciation scene, from a 15th-century book of hours. Moving from the material the immaterial, the class finished the day by dropping in to the Interactive Commons to try out Prof. Gertsman’s new HoloLens environment, a mixed-reality space styled as a medieval chapel where students can hold, rotate, and resize objects (that are otherwise far too fragile to handle) from the CMA’s medieval collection.
