ARTH 350/450, Wednesdays, 7:00pm–9:30pm
Dominique DeLuca, PhD
In this course we will examine medieval romance imagery with special focus on illuminated manuscripts produced from the 12th through the 15th centuries in northern Europe. We will study depictions of historical people and events, mythological tales, and episodes from popular poetry and literature within the social and historical frameworks of the cultures in which they were produced. Texts will include those from the medieval Arthurian cycle, the Roman de la Rose, and chronicles of the Trojan War and Alexander the Great. We will also consider how some of these same and similar narratives were told and depicted by cultures outside of northern Europe. This course will be taught remotely.
