Congratulations to Prof. Gertsman, whose forthcoming book, Nothing is the Matter: Spaces of Absence in Late Medieval Art, just received grants from the CAA’s Millard Meiss Publication Fund and the Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities! The book explores complex conversations among philosophy, physics, mathematics, piety, and image-making in order to suggest that late medieval art, in its constant attempts to grapple with the unrepresentability of the invisible, is predicated on new engagements with emptiness, voids, gaps, holes, and erasures.
