Medieval artists used visual cues of monstrosity to depict both foreigners and people who did not conform to restrictive social norms, and who therefore seemed alien in some way. Attitudes reflected in medieval art betray complex feelings of fear, loathing, curiosity, and desire of the other. Analysis of such imagery demonstrates long-lasting consequences for interactions between peoples and the development of racial thinking. Sherry Lindquist and Asa S. Mittman are co-curators of “Medieval Monsters: Terrors, Aliens, Wonders,” on view at the Cleveland Museum of Art through October 6th.
Sherry and Asa will also give a tour of their show for Prof. Gertsman’s “Medieval Matters” course on Thursday, September 25th, between 1 and 2:15. If you are not enrolled in the class but wish to attend the tour, please let Prof. Gertsman know.
