Professor Maggie Popkin and doctoral student Clara Pinchbeck (pictured here with Professor Tina Howe of the CWRU Religious Studies Department and Dr. Bonna Wescoat, Director of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens), recently presented paper at the symposium, “Three-Dimensional Experiences of Ancient Environments in Athens.” The symposium was co-organized by Dr. Popkin and Dr. Wescoat and featured innovative research from an international group of presenters on how new technologies are changing the way we study and think about ancient sacred spaces. The mixed reality model of the Sanctuary of the Great Gods at Samothrace, Greece–developed by Dr. Popkin and CWRU’s Interactive Commons in collaboration with colleagues at Emory University–was a featured project, and conference attendees were able to try it out in person. The symposium was made possible in part by the generous support of Dr. Popkin and Dr. Howe’s Expanding Horizons Initiative-Experimental Humanities Grant from the College of Arts and Sciences.
