The review provides a powerful endorsement of the kind of academic and curatorial collaboration exemplified by Professor Gertsman course, “Piety and Leisure in Late Medieval Europe.” This was the first graduate seminar of its kind, made possible by the Mellon foundation, which was based on the extraordinary collection of medieval art at the CMA and featured object studies by Stephen Fliegel, the Robert P. Bergman Curator of Medieval Art. The course resulted in a show held at the Cleveland Museum of Art from 9 October 2016 until 26 February 2017, and focused on the museum’s celebrated Gothic table fountain. Students in the course contributed catalogue entries and the wall text.
