Professor Elina Gertsman Awarded Distinguished University Professor at Convocation

Congratulations to our very own Professor Elina Gertsman for her appointment as Distinguished University Professor, the highest distinction granted to faculty at CWRU. Professor Gertsman is not only the youngest faculty member at CWRU to ever be awarded this title—she is also the first professor from our department and the second woman in all of the humanities.

Among the criteria for the award are a “stellar academic record,” an “outstanding national and international stature,” and evidence of “distinguished service within and for the university.” Indeed, as a lauded teacher, mentor, and acting Chair of our department, Professor Gertsman continually exceeds all these criteria. Professor Gertsman is a Guggenheim Fellow, a Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America, and the author and editor of 13 books and countless articles. She has spearheaded interdisciplinary projects in the digital humanities, such as the mixed-reality application “Immersive Realms,” and catalyzed the recent growth of the department. She is beloved by her students and respected by scholars across the nation and the globe.

Professor Gertsman cites a passion for teaching and the continued support of CWRU as key to her success. We’re thrilled her fierce and dogged support of our studies continues to receive the recognition it deserves.
