A Sneak Peek at Prof. Elina Gertsman’s The Middle Ages in 50 Images

Gertsman Cover of The Middle Ages in 50 Objects

Now in production and due out this May, Professor Gertsman’s new book, co-authored with one of the field’s foremost historians, Barbara H. Rosenwein, weaves its narrative through the extraordinary array of medieval objects in the collections of the Cleveland Museum of Art. This gorgeous book  encompasses the European, Byzantine, and Islamic worlds, and explores the many different communities that made them up.  Divided into four topics—The Holy and the Faithful, The Sinful and the Spectral, Daily Life and Its Fictions, Death and its Aftermath—the book introduces both the casual browser and the serious student to the Middle Ages through its material culture.
